Unfortunately infant acid reflux is a lot more difficult to diagnose that many parents believe. Although many children will often spit up food when they are either a newborn or an infant it does not actually mean that they are suffering with acid reflux. All may mean is that they can be a little bit more messy than other infants when it comes to eating.
Whilst there are other children who will suffer with some of the symptoms associated with acid reflux such as being fussy about what they eat and do not actually spit up anything at all.
However in most cases when an infant is suffering from acid reflux they were generally show the more obvious symptoms associated with this particular condition, such as vomiting or spitting up.
Whilst as they get older both infants and children suffering from what are known as silent reflux symptoms will show the following:-
1. The become irritable normally this is because they have difficulty sleeping.
2. They may become anorexic as unfortunately they associated food as being bad for them or they just may begin to lose weight.
3. In infants often they will arch their back whilst they are being fed.
4. They will constantly suffer from abdominal pains or chest pains.
Unfortunately there are times when a infant is suffering from the more subtle symptoms associated with acid reflux the problem may well be overlooked. What is important to remember is though your child may be constantly spitting up they do not in fact have infant acid reflux but if you are at all worried that they may have then arrange to see your doctor or pediatric gastroenterologist and they should be able to provide the correct diagnosis for your infants problem. This is especially important if you infant happens to be spitting up more than you would consider to be normal or if happens to be showing any other signs or symptoms that would normally be associated with acid reflux. What you should never do if you think your child is suffering from infant acid reflux is to treat them yourself using over the counter products as these can only make a bad condition worse and could actually prove fatal in some cases.
